BOUGUEREAU, Adolphe William (1825-1905)
b. d. La Rochelle, French painter, studied in Paris under Picot. While in Rome (1850-1854) he studied Italian art. He was a teacher at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts for twenty-five years. His paintings of religious and mythical subjects, and of contented peasantry, were refined to a high finish from oil studies. His spirited handling of the oil paint medium confirms his confidence of execution.
