AALTONEN, Waino
b. Kaarina, Finland. Self-taught sculptor whose work embodies the strong nationalist feeling in Finland between the wars. He revived the practice of direct carving in stone, and his granite figures combine the Neo-classical Finnish tradition with a new feeling for truth to material.
