Quick Reference Dictionary of Art
Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770), was the last of the great Italian decorative painters. Though famous, Tiepolo was neither consistently nor universally admired; nonetheless, he never lacked commissions. Although his revolutionary technique contrasts strangely with his residually Baroque altarpieces, his luminous handling of fresco ranks as one of the major technical advances of the 18th Century. He traveled and painted in northern Italy and spent the last eight years of his life in Madrid.
